Administering NBME Web-Based Exams
The NBME now has several web-based testing programs "under its belt". Customized Assessment Services was introduced in July 2007 and a Musculoskeletal examination is now available as a service to all medical schools. New web-based tests are on the near horizon - two subject tests targeted to ambulatory medicine clerkships and medicine sub-internships will be available to medical schools over the next six months. A research collaboration involving clinical progress tests has been ongoing for the past two years. The paper-and-pencil subject examinations will be gradually transitioned to the web format over the next several years, starting with the Comprehensive Basic Science and Comprehensive Clinical Science Examinations in 2009.
Now is the time to find out what's involved in preparing for and administering an NBME web-based exam. Join us for a discussion of the activities involved in managing these test administrations and for a preview of the tools that the NBME provides to help you to achieve web testing nirvana.

Web-based Assessments for Clinical Sciences - Clinical Progress Testing
Over the past two years, the NBME has collaborated with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and the University of South Florida College of Medicine in a research project involving web-based clinical progress tests. The purpose of the clinical progress test is to explore the development and use of a form of progress testing in clerkship education. Multiple test forms are built to certain specifications, and students periodically (typically every three months) take one of those forms to determine if they are making good overall progress in mastering clerkship educational objectives and to identify areas of strength and weakness for individual students. Another collaborative project is underway with four medical schools in the United Kingdom and Ireland to design and implement a multi-school progress testing program.
The NBME will be expanding the clinical progress test program in the US and is looking for schools that may be interested in participating in a pilot test during the 2009-2010 academic year. This session will provide attendees with details on the various components of clinical progress testing, including types of performance feedback.
