Subject Examinations
NBME subject examinations are achievement tests in a broad sense, requiring medical students to solve scientific and clinical problems.
Transition to Web Based Examinations
The NBME is transitioning its subject examinations to a web based format, although paper subject examinations will continue to be available.
In addition, several new subject examinations have been introduced. These exams are available in a web-format only.
Examinations that have both a web and paper format are identical in content. All Basic Science Subject Examinations are now available in either web or paper format; the Clinical Science Subject Examinations will be available in both formats by July 2011. After the transition phase is complete, new forms of all subject examinations will be implemented only as web based tests. Paper subject examinations will continue to be available, but by 2015 it is likely that the NBME paper subject examinations will be phased out.
