Questions?

Send an e-mail to medicalschoolservices@nbme.org if you have any questions or comments about the Payment Voucher Service.

Overview

The NBME offers web-based self-assessments for US and international medical students and graduates. Self-assessments are purchased by individuals for a fee of $45.00 each by visiting the NBME Self-Assessment Services (NSAS) Interactive Website and using a credit card or money order as payment.

NBME Voucher Information Program (VIP)
Medical schools may purchase payment vouchers for anyone who may be preparing to take USMLE or who wants to become familiar with USMLE structure and content. These prepaid vouchers may then be distributed and used for requesting an assessment.

  • The Comprehensive Basic Science Self-Assessment (CBSSA) uses multiple-choice items based on information typically covered during basic medical education courses.
  • The Comprehensive Clinical Science Self-Assessment (CCSSA) uses multiple-choice items based on information covered during the core clinical clerkships.
  • The Comprehensive Clinical Medicine Self-Assessment (CCMSA) uses multiple-choice items based on information typically covered in clinical encounters.

Item content resembles that of USMLE Step 1, Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) and the multiple-choice component of Step 3, respectively.

Voucher Management
The NBME VIP offers a website through which the purchased vouchers can be retrieved and tracked. It also provides the capability to view the performance feedback for those who redeemed the vouchers and completed a self-assessment.  Access to this website varies according to the type of organization requesting the vouchers.

Medical Schools
The online VIP is available through the NBME Medical School Portal, the primary interface for medical school faculty and staff to access NBME services.   The portal School Account Manager can create accounts for those who need access to the VIP.

Other Organizations
Those who are not affiliated with a medical school should submit a completed order form and payment to the NBME first.  The NBME will then provide the URL and password to access the online VIP.

Requesting Payment Vouchers

Requests must be made on the Voucher Information Program (VIP) Order Form. The order form can either be downloaded directly from the VIP website on the Medical School Portal or by clicking the link below.  The fee is $45.00 for each voucher, which is good for one assessment. Vouchers may be requested for the CBSSA, CCSSA, CCMSA separately or in combination.

Send the completed order form a check or money order for the total amount to the NBME as instructed. Fees must be paid in advance and are non-refundable. Personal checks will not be accepted.

Each voucher is good for six months from the NBME date of issue and for one self-assessment service. Voucher recipients will login to the NBME Self-Assessment Services website to create an account (or login to their existing account, if they already have one) to request an assessment. The voucher ID # must be entered as the method of payment.
