United States Medical Licensing Examination

USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK and CS Application Materials

For Students and Graduates of Medical Schools in the United States and Canada Accredited by the LCME or AOA

The application process for Step 1 and/or Step 2 CK requires you to select a three-month period, such as January-February-March or February-March-April, during which you plan to take the exam.

Applicants for Step 2 CS are assigned a 12-month eligibility period that begins on the date that their registration information is entered into the Step 2 CS scheduling system. The links below will take you to the following sections of the USMLE website:

  • USMLE Bulletin of Information
    The Bulletin includes information on all aspects of USMLE, such as eligibility requirements, scheduling test dates, testing, and score reporting. You must review and become familiar with the Bulletin before completing your application for Step 1 or Step 2.
  • Step 1 and Step 2 CK Content Description and Sample Test Materials
    Content descriptions and sample multiple-choice test items for Step 1 and Step 2 CK are provided at the USMLE website. If you are applying to take Step 1 or Step 2 CK, you should acquaint yourself with these and with the test software by practicing with the sample test items at the USMLE website.

2008 Application Materials

The 2008 USMLE application materials have been posted. Use the 2008 materials to apply for:

  • USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK for eligibility periods ending in 2008
  • USMLE Step 2 CS

Please note: If you submit a check in payment of registration and/or examinee records services that is uncollectible and returned to the NBME, you will be charged a $25 fee. No further services will be provided until payment is received.

Planning for Step 2 CS

Students and graduates of accredited medical school programs in the United States and Canada who need to take and/or pass Step 2 CS to meet a school requirement and/or for the Match are strongly encouraged to apply for and schedule their exam early. Learn more
