To pursue our mission of protecting the health of the public through state of the art assessment of health professionals, the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) incorporates the public voice into its policies by including public members in its governance and test development committees and strengthening ties with national organizations that represent patients.
NBME is committed to further cultivating relationships and using their valuable input to further quality healthcare through the evaluation of health professionals.

- In 2008, Annual Meeting suggestions spurred outreach to many parts of the public and renewed proposals to increase public connections. The NBME subsequently created a new committee, called the Public Stakeholders Task Force. Its members are appointed by the NBME Chair.
- In 2009, this fledgling task force evolved into a formal committee that to this day participates in developing NBME policies relevant to the national conversation on assessment. It has also identified many ways in which the NBME can nurture collaboration with public stakeholders.
- The committee proposed that NBME establish an Office of Public Engagement in 2013. The Office is responsible for public engagement as a visible and important strategy to NBME's goals and priorities.
