Andrew Emerson, PhD
NLP Scientist
Andrew Emerson joined the NLP/AI team in January 2025. His current efforts are primarily focused on the Clinical Reasoning Learning Tool, where he is researching and developing ways to both build conversational agents to interact with physicians and methods to evaluate such agents. He received his doctorate in computer science from North Carolina State University in 2022, where he specialized in multimodal learning analytics and other machine learning applications to educational technology, such as intelligent tutoring systems and game-based learning environments. Prior to that, he received his Bachelor of Science from Furman University in 2017. Before joining NBME, Andrew worked as an AI engineer at Educational Testing Service for three years, where he built multimodal scoring systems to measure durable skills.
