Insights and Learnings from the OSCE for Clinical Reasoning Creative Community
The future of medical education assessment hinges on developing tools that ensure every medical student is fully prepared to excel in treating a diverse population. While higher-stakes assessments like the former USMLE® Step 2 CS effectively evaluated knowledge and skills, a different approach is needed to provide regular feedback and gauge skills and behaviors as they develop — one that assesses the thought process in addition to the outcome to offer educators a better understanding of how learners arrive at their conclusions.
It takes a community
The development of novel assessment approaches is a shared goal, and collaboration is integral to its success. In 2022, NBME created its first Creative Community, uniting medical educators and staff from 10 schools with NBME psychometricians and researchers to explore the use of OSCEs as a method to assess the process of clinical reasoning. Community members spent two years examining how OSCE simulations could be used to offer feedback, foster skill development and enhance learning.
In this video, community members reflect on their collaborative journey and how their collective efforts are helping to shape new perspectives on teaching and assessing clinical reasoning.
Be a part of the future of assessment
This initiative marks the beginning of a transformative journey in medical education assessment, and together we are building the foundation for exceptional patient care. We’re rethinking assessment science to facilitate this evolution, but we can’t do it alone or without new perspectives and ideas.
