NBME Continues 21-Day Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Educational Challenge

Posted January 26, 2024

NBME strives to demonstrate Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) values and practices in everything we doin our staff composition and work culture; through our products and services; and in our engagement with the Philadelphia, medical education and assessment communities. To continue enhancing our knowledge and understanding of DEI issues, and topics of interest, NBME’s DEI Advisory Council and staff volunteers curated content for our third annual 21-Day DEI Challenge. We are pleased to share with you the educational journey NBME staff participated in.

What NBME Teams Experienced in the 21-Day DEI Challenge:

  • A thematically organized and curated collection of content that builds on previous learnings.
  • Daily selections of materials, which provided the flexibility to engage with one or multiple activities, depending on time available.
  • Various media and resources that appealed to different learning styles and preferences.
  • Approximate reading/listening/viewing times of each content item.

In addition, the content was grouped weekly.

For Week One, the content centered social determinants of health, microaggressions, Hispanic/Latine terminology, legislation affecting DEI, environmental racism, ageism and disability in the workplace.

Materials included within Week Two were focused on cultural humility, bias in AI, wokeness in the U.S., racism/sexism in healthcare, anti-Asian sentiment in the U.S., LGBTQIA+ rights and mental health.

Lastly, the content for Week Three addressed women’s health and rights, cultural appropriation vs. appreciation, indigenous peoples, access to education in the U.S., disabilities rights movement, Black/African American history and current events and Gen Z and the future.
