Education grants awarded to organizations in Brazil and Mexico

May 7, 2018

The National Board of Medical Examiners® (NBME®) Latin America Grants Program awarded grants to three collaborations of Latin American medical schools for their proposals to enhance the quality of evaluation in health professions education in their respective regions. The Latin America Grants Committee selected the recipients in February after receiving more than a dozen proposals.

Over its 103-year history, the NBME has pursued and maintained the highest standards of excellence in its examination programs. As part of its Centennial celebration in 2015, the NBME supported three consortia of Latin American medical schools in their work to develop evaluation capacity in their countries. Building on the success of that program, the Latin America Grants Program presented the three recent awards.

Each proposal selected includes ideas for sustainable faculty development activities, creation of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), and development of a methodology for longitudinal assessment of abilities and skills acquired over the course of a medical internship. The proposals are designed to have a broad, sustainable impact by building local capacity to evaluate key learning outcomes in the education of those pursuing health professions. They are also expected to improve program quality at participating schools.
