Health and Wellness Coach Certifying Exam Helps Demonstrate Excellence

Posted May 11, 2018

This June, hundreds of potential health and wellness coaches will take the Health and Wellness Coach Certifying Examination (HWCCE) to demonstrate their competency in helping people achieve their personal goals for health and wellbeing.

National Board of Medical Examiners® (NBME®) leadership and executive leaders from the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) collaborated on the first national certification for individual health and wellness coaches.

“The collaboration between NBME and NBHWC provides an opportunity to draw upon the unique capabilities of each of the organizations to provide a high-quality assessment system for Health and Wellness Coaches,” said Aggie Butler, vice president of domestic programs at the NBME.

The two organizations created an assessment that tests knowledge of competencies such as:

  • Coaching structure
  • Coaching process, which includes coaching relationship, communication, and techniques
  • Health and wellness
  • Ethics and legal

For the 2017 pilot, over 1000 coaches-in-training sat for the exam. NBME staff anticipates the 2018 administration will be just as promising. To date, over 450 examinees have been approved to test in June, with most of those applicants having scheduled their examinations. A November administration is also planned.

The partnership between the two organizations allows both to further their mission.
