New NBME and NRMP Research Examines Residency Program Ranking Patterns

Posted April 23, 2026

NBME announces the publication of a new research article in the Journal of Graduate Medical Education (JGME).

In "Applicant Characteristics Associated With Being Ranked by US Surgical Specialty Programs in 2022-2025," NBME and NRMP analyze how applicant characteristics—including applicant type, United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) performance, sex, and underrepresented in medicine (URiM) status—are reflected on residency program rank order lists in the surgical specialties. Results demonstrate that surgical programs rank applicants differently based on applicant type and USMLE performance, and to a lesser extent sex and URiM status, highlighting opportunities to examine transparency during the transition to residency.
