NBME Publishes First Transparency Report Highlighting Accountability, Innovation and Stakeholder Engagement

August 7, 2026

PHILADELPHIA, August 2026 — NBME today released its inaugural Annual Transparency Report, providing a closer look at how the organization develops assessments, makes decisions, engages stakeholders, and advances its mission to support the health care profession.

The report reflects NBME's commitment to transparency at a time when health care, medical education, and assessment are experiencing significant change driven by evolving physician practice, emerging technologies, and increasing stakeholder expectations.

“One of the lessons I have learned during my time at NBME is that transparency is not tied to a single leader, department, or initiative. It is an organizational discipline that must continue as expectations, technologies, and leadership evolve,” said Peter Katsufrakis, MD, MBA, NBME President and CEO. “While it offers a snapshot of where we are today, I hope it also reflects who we aspire to be: an organization trusted for the confidentiality and security of our work, while remaining committed to accountability, continuous learning, collaboration, and service to the communities that depend on us.”

The report highlights several areas of organizational focus, including:

  • Ongoing USMLE® practice analysis work examining how physician practice is evolving and how assessments can remain aligned with contemporary clinical practice.
  • Improvements to the USMLE accommodations process through integration with the MyUSMLE portal, creating a more streamlined and transparent experience for examinees.
  • NBME's approach to the responsible use of artificial intelligence in assessment, emphasizing that technology should support, not replace, human judgment and accountability.
  • Recent efforts to support nutrition education through enhancements to nutrition-related content and feedback within the USMLE program.

As NBME approaches a leadership transition with Peter Katsufrakis, MD, MBA, president and CEO, planned retirement in November 2026, the report underscores that transparency is intended to remain a long-term organizational practice rather than a one-time initiative.
