Former NBME President and CEO Dr. Lawrence Bowles devoted more than four decades of service to NBME, helping guide the organization through his leadership and continued volunteer service. He died Sept. 15, 2026.
Dr. Bowles served on the NBME Executive Board from 1981 to 2000 and held numerous leadership roles throughout his tenure, including Chair of the Executive Board from 1987 to 1991. In 1992, he was appointed President and CEO, a position he held until his retirement in 2000.
During his tenure as president, Dr. Bowles oversaw the transition from the NBME Part examinations to the United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®), the relocation of NBME headquarters to its current location in 1994, the establishment of the Edward J. Stemmler Research Fund and the implementation of computer-based testing.
Following his retirement, Dr. Bowles remained connected to NBME as an honorary member of the NBME Membership and NBME Council, reflecting his enduring commitment to the organization and its mission.
"As both a Board leader and President, Dr. Bowles dedicated much of his professional life to advancing NBME's mission. His thoughtful leadership, unwavering commitment to quality and service to the medical education community continue to be reflected in the organization's work today," said Dr. Reena Karani, NBME Board Chair.
Dr. Peter Katsufrakis, NBME President and CEO, added, “Dr. Bowles is still remembered fondly and with great affection by those staff members and volunteers who served with him. We honor his legacy with gratitude and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones."
In honor of his life and legacy, NBME will make a donation to the Collington Foundation, where Dr. Bowles and his wife lived until his passing.
