2020-21 NBME Call for Nominations

On behalf of the NBME Membership, the NBME Nominating Committee is seeking nominations for members-at-large. Nominations materials are due no later than September 15, 2020. The nominations will be reviewed by the Nominating Committee in February 2021.

NBME recognizes the benefits inherent within a diverse community of officers, directors, and representatives. In a desire to reflect this diversity, NBME seeks individuals with varied experiences, perspectives and backgrounds across region, race, gender, age, and identity. Nominations of individuals in all career phases and professions are encouraged.

Nominees are reviewed and selected by the NBME Nominating Committee and are subject to approval by the NBME Executive Board in February 2021. Qualifications

Candidates should be able to represent the broad public interest and offer insight reflecting a firm understanding of, and support for, NBME’s mission. In addition, they should demonstrate integrity, credibility, active participation, ability to handle conflict constructively, strong interpersonal skills, and the willingness to move forward on initiatives and programs.

  • Candidates should demonstrate a broad understanding of the healthcare or medical education landscape, educational and economic conditions, and trends of their region.
  • Candidates should have experience that could connect NBME with global collaborations or networks.
  • Candidates should be capable of assisting NBME in making connections with other individuals and organizations in their region.
  • Candidates must be proficient in English.
  • Candidates may come from within medical education, healthcare, or industries outside of, but directly impacting or supporting, healthcare, such as:
    • Healthcare technology
      • Digital health
      • Electronic health records
      • Telehealth
    • Health system management and administration
      • Health system science
      • Healthcare payers
      • Senior executives in complex healthcare systems
    • Information technology used in the healthcare and assessment space
      • Artificial intelligence
      • Big data analytics
      • Gamification
      • Simulation
    • Innovation in assessment and education
      • Assessment for learning
      • Assessment of healthcare professionals/doctors in practice
      • Healthcare disparities and implicit bias

      • Candidates across the continuum of education, from student through dean, are encouraged to apply.
  • Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of the relationship between education, training, and certification in their field of care.

  • Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in issues related to healthcare.
  • Candidates may have in-depth knowledge and expertise which supplements that otherwise represented within the NBME Membership, such as:

    • Marketing and communications
    • Public or patient advocacy
    • Non-profit or for-profit board experience
    • Curriculum design

    • Institutional strategy management

Time Commitment

Members-at-large serve an initial four (4) year term and are eligible to serve two (2) consecutive terms. Members are expected to attend a two-day annual meeting in Philadelphia, usually in March.

Roles and Responsibilities of Membership

At its Annual Meeting, the NBME Membership reviews the activities of NBME; reviews and advises on policy for the organization; elects at-large members and members of the Executive Board; and engages in strategic planning and other activities.

Once elected, members are eligible for service in other capacities, including election to NBME's board of directors (“Executive Board”) and other areas of service such as the NBME Finance Committee, Nominating Committee, Hubbard Award Committee, Stemmler Medical Education Research Steering Committee, and specific program committees.

Composition of the NBME Membership

Approximately 80 individuals constitute the NBME Membership, including individuals with responsibility and expertise in the health professions, medical education and evaluation, medical practice, NBME test committee representatives, and representatives of national professional organizations and the public.

The quarter of the NBME Membership represented by other organizations includes individuals from the US Air Force, Army, Navy, Public Health Service, and Veterans Affairs, the Federation of State Medical Boards, the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Medical Association, the Council of Medical Specialty Societies, the American Medical Student Association, the Student National Medical Association, and the American Medical Association Resident Physicians Section.
