POWER OF COMMUNITY: Addressing the Challenges of Clinical Reasoning Assessment

Insights and Key Learnings from the OSCE for Clinical Reasoning Creative Community Initiative

In 2022, NBME brought 10 medical educators together with NBME staff including psychometricians and researchers to tackle one of medical education assessment’s most challenging questions—how do we effectively assess the process of clinical reasoning, in addition to the outcome, and help learners develop this essential skill?

The groundbreaking Creative Community initiative highlighted the importance of developing new methods to evaluate clinical reasoning and provide consistent feedback to help students strengthen their skills and behaviors as they develop.

This presentation, including the Q&A session, showcases the learnings of this two-year collaboration, exploring several key areas:

  • The need for a fresh approach to assessing clinical reasoning
  • Why using Evidence-Centered Design (ECD) is necessary for fair and valid assessment development
