Examinees
Are the Comprehensive Self-Assessments available for purchase through NBME the same as the USMLE® practice sessions available through the Prometric Centers?
No, the self-assessments contain different content and are available at any time to any person who wishes to purchase one via MyNBME® Examinee Portal, and may be taken in any location in which you have a suitable computer with internet connectivity. The self-assessments provide you detailed diagnostic information about your performance upon completion of the test, including areas of strength and weakness, as well as a lookup table for USMLE scores (Comprehensive Basic Science and Comprehensive Clinical Science Self-Assessments only).
The USMLE practice sessions at the Prometric Centers cannot be scheduled or purchased until you receive your USMLE registration permit, and must be taken onsite at a Prometric Center. The Prometric practice sessions uses the same sample test materials provided by the USMLE registration entities and at the USMLE website, and is shorter than the actual corresponding USMLE exam. This option allows you to experience USMLE sample test materials in the same environment as your actual test. The practice sessions provide you limited diagnostic information (percent of items answered correctly in each block) upon completion.
What is the difference between taking a self-assessment in the standard-paced timing mode versus the self-paced timing mode?
You can select your desired pacing when ordering self-assessments:
- Choose the Standard-paced option if you want the timing conditions of your self-assessment to be comparable to USMLE, IFOM, Clinical Science Subject Examinations.
- Choose the Self-paced option for additional time to complete your self-assessment. Self-paced timing offers examinees four times as long to complete questions as standard-paced (e.g. 5 hours to complete a Comprehensive Basic Science Self-Assessment block in self-paced timing, vs. 1 hour, 15 minutes to complete the same block in standard-paced).
Can I review my self-assessment after I have completed it?
Once you have completed the entire self-assessment, you can review all the items, correct answers, and answer explanations under performance feedback in the exam review section. However, you cannot go back and change answers once you have completed the exam. While you are working within each section and before you lock it, you can change answers, mark them for review, or leave them blank. When you exit each section by clicking “End” then “OK”, you lock that section and your answers become final.
You can review and print your performance profile for 2-years after completing the self-assessment. You will also have access to the interactive score report, where you can view the assessment items and answer explanations, for 2-years after completing the self-assessment.
Are answer explanations to the self-assessments items available?
Yes. Immediately following the completion of any of the comprehensive or clinical science mastery series self-assessments, you will be able to review all self-assessment items along with answer explanations for each item. You can also log back into MyNBME® Examinee Portal to view the items and answer explanations in your interactive score report.
You will have access to the interactive score report for 2-years following completion of your self-assessment.
Can I take a break while completing an NBME Self-Assessment?
Yes, you can take a break by pausing your exam to stop the timer and resuming at a later time.
How can I pause and resume while taking an NBME Self-Assessment?
During your self-assessment, select Pause and then select OK/Confirm when prompted. This pauses your assessment, stops the timer, and exits the session (in many cases, the browser window/tab will close). When you’re ready to continue, return to your assessment list/status page and select Resume/Launch/Continue—you’ll return to the same section and question where you left off.
For step-by-step instructions (including tips for taking breaks between blocks), please review the Pausing and Resuming Your NBME Self-Assessment Guide.

How long are the IFOM Examinations?
IFOM Basic Science Examination (BSE) and Clinical Science Examination (CSE) both comprise 160 multiple-choice questions. Examinees have four hours to complete the exam.
In what languages are the IFOM exams offered?
IFOM Basic Science Examination (BSE) and Clinical Science Examination (CSE) are available in English and Spanish. IFOM CSE is also offered in Portuguese. Additional languages may be added based on demand.
Where is IFOM offered?
The IFOM exams are offered at participating Prometric test centers in approximately 50 countries around the world.
The exams are also offered under the auspices of eligible medical schools and other organizations, at their sites, either over the web or as a paper and pencil exam.
How often can I take an IFOM exam?
Individuals can take the IFOM Clinical Science Examination (CSE) up to three times per year and the Basic Science Examination (BSE) up to two times per year.
How will I get my scores and how long will it take?
Scores from web-based organizational administrations are normally posted within 2 weeks of the test date; scores from paper exam administration are normally posted within 2 weeks of NBME’s receipt of answer sheets. The organization’s executive chief proctor will be notified by email when the scores have been posted.
Examinees who take an IFOM exam under the auspices of a school or other organization will receive their scores from the organization, not directly from NBME.
Scores from individual IFOM administrations are typically reported within three weeks of your test date. However, delays are possible for various reasons. Please allow up to six weeks to receive your score report. You will be notified by email when your scores are available for download.
What is the IFOM passing score?
NBME does not set a minimum passing score for the IFOM examinations because they are used for different purposes (both low and high stakes) and in different healthcare and educational contexts around the world.
NBME psychometric staff can work with schools and other institutions that use the IFOM exams to recommend a passing standard for a particular school or institution.
How can I use my IFOM score? What programs and countries accept it?
The IFOM exams are used by schools, hospital systems, ministries, and other organizations around the world for various purposes, including as an entrance requirement to graduate training programs (e.g., residencies) and as a certification exam, enabling one to practice medicine in that country.
Some organizations that use IFOM scores for training selection or certification require that examinees take the exam under their auspices, while others will accept IFOM scores from any administration.
NBME recommends that those considering taking IFOM in order to gain entrance to training or medical practice first contact the program or governing agency to confirm that their IFOM score will be accepted. NBME does not maintain a list of programs or countries that use IFOM for selection purposes.

How does Customized Assessment Services differ from the NBME Subject Exams?
Rather than a fixed-form exam, Customized Assessment Services provides medical school faculty with the ability to review and select individual items to be included on an exam. Because Customized Assessment Services exams are unique to an institution, we can only provide item-level comparative data for your students’ performance. Samples of the Customized Assessment Services score reports can be viewed here.
How much does a Customized Assessment Services exam cost?
Customized Assessment Services operates on a subscription basis, with an annual subscription fee of $1500 per institution. Additional fees are assessed when ordering exams for administration, which is based on the length of the exam. The per examinee fees for exam administration can be viewed here.
Where are Customized Assessment Services exams administered? How is the exam delivered?
Customized Assessment Services (CAS) Proctored exams are administered locally at your institution on either university or student-owned laptops or tablets, while CAS Practice exams can be taken anywhere. Exam administration is not available at Prometric Test Centers.
What is the item pacing on Customized Assessment Services exams? How can I accommodate my students that require extra time?
The standard item pacing on all Customized Assessment Services exams is 90s/item. Once an exam has been ordered for administration, a roster of students will be created for that administration which you can use to assign a student additional time.
When will my Customized Assessment Services score reports be available?
Percent correct scores are available to the proctor at the immediate close of a test session. Score reports are posted to the MyNBME® Services Portal 2-3 business days after the administration.
What resources are there for medical school faculty learning how to use the CAS system?
Faculty can reach out to support@nbme.org or call 215-495-6000 for assistance navigating the CAS system. All CAS users are provided helpful tutorial videos and access to the CAS User Guide.

Who can use IFOM exams?
NBME wishes to work with medical schools and other organizations (for example, ministries of health, residency programs and hospitals, and other healthcare agencies) whose programs and goals could benefit from high-quality comprehensive assessments. Generally, medical schools should be eligible to apply for ECFMG certification—see the ECFMG Information Booklet for more information. We require that all institutional users be able to comply with our test administration standards, including security protocols.
Individuals may apply to take the International Foundations of Medicine (IFOM) exams if they are currently enrolled in or have graduated from medical school. For more information about taking an IFOM exam as an individual, see.

How can examinees prepare to take the IFOM exams?
The IFOM Clinical Science Self-Assessment Examination is an 80-question web-based exam built to the same content blueprint as the IFOM CSE. The self-assessment is available in English and Spanish. Performance feedback includes a total score and a list of every question on the assessment, with the correct answer displayed. A conversion table allows examinees to translate their self-assessment score to an approximate IFOM score.
NBME also offers free, 20-question web-based assessments for the IFOM BSE and CSE, which allow examinees to familiarize themselves with the web-based testing format, in either timed or untimed test administration conditions. The short assessments are not intended to assist examinees in preparing for the content of the exam, only to familiarize examinees with the style and format of test questions they are likely to see on the IFOM web-based exams.
